To make a manual check you'll need to use the browser's developer tools:
- Right click anywhere on the page and from the menu select "Inspect element" to open the developer tools
- Navigate to the "Network" tab of the opened window
- You'll notice the list is empty and you will need to refresh the page while the developer tools is still open.
- After the refresh, the name of the page will most likely be on the top of the list. For exmple if the page is https://example.com/custom-page.html the document you are looking for is custom-page.html.
- After selecting the document from the list, on the right side from the menu bar select "Headers"
- In the "Response Headers" section search for "Content-Encoding". If your page is using a compression method you'll see it next to it as "gzip" or "br".

My server does not use compression. What do I do?
If you have access to the server configuration file you'll have to follow a few steps to make the changes. If not you'll have to contact the server administrator to make these changes for you. However depending on the server type you are using the steps are different.
In case of Apache, it is most likely your website owns a ".htaccess" file. A configuration file that allows changing server behaviour, on a limited scale, on certain situations. You can find this file in the root directory of your site and to open it you need a text editor, a basic one should do the trick.
Another option is to change the main server configuration file "httpd.conf" or "apache2.conf".
In either cases add these lines to the file:

Save the file and restart the server.
Open the server configuration file usually located at /etc/nginx/nginx.conf or /etc/nginx/sites-available/default and add the following lines in the http block to enable GZIP compression:
